M.I.A. + Middle Finger + Apology = GET OVER IT, U.S.A.!!!

I think that my perspective is starting to change now that I'm responsible for more than myself. Or maybe my tolerance is lower because I'm older. Who the hell knows. But all I have to say is, USA- GET OVER IT!
Are we serious about the freaking NFL apologizing about M.I.A. giving the middle finger? Has anyone turned on a television lately?

Here is is... the dreaded MIDDLE FINGER.

Ummmm....
Why is it okay for me to watch a TV program with a severed foot on an airplane (CSI; Jet Blue), or some chicks drinking DONKEY SEMEN (Fear Factor, last week, google it!), or another inane and stupid sit-com (so many I can't even name them) yet the NFL and NBC or CBS or whatever think that a middle finger is "not for family programming."
ARE YOU SERIOUS?
She's a performer! It's a SHOW! How could you even book M.I.A. without the knowledge that she would created controversy somewhere? She's not Hannah Montana, people. Does anyone remember that "Like A Prayer" was BANNED on MTV, yet here we have it on Super Bowl Sunday's "family programming."

Anyhow, I love me some M.I.A., have for years. So I was super psyched that the halftime show had a little spice in it!

I really, truly hope that we can work towards progression and freedom of expression together... because this conservative 'tude is ridiculous.

So, in my tribute to M.I.A., here's her new video. Wow- when I watched it last week, there were only 100K views. Now, it's over 5 million! Here's to your middle finger, M.I.A.!!!

Okay, so a few things about me. I love New York, and I hate New York. New York is as much a part of me as my hometown of Old Town, Alexandria, Virginia is- full of years of memories and an integral part of my life. For over 10 years, I've spent the summers in New York and the rest of the year in Miami- well, until I started to mix things up a little. Like, a winter in New York and a summer in Miami! Or, Maine for the summer, and New York for visits. And then, of course, the summers in Holland!
But, no matter what, any day of the week, you could drop me off in any part of Manhattan and I would feel like I was home. (I would say Brooklyn, but they've changed the subway stops since I lived in Park Slope and it is way too confusing now).
Most of my best friends live in New York. One of them laughs when he says, "Caroline, I miss you coming to New York to live and then complaining about how much you hate it and running back to Miami."
Errr. ummm. heehee.

One of my favorite weekly guilty pleasures is to read the "Social Q's" in the NY Times. Genius! Amazing! I totally heart Philip Galanes and truly can't even get over the letters that he prints- I can only imagine what he has to edit before the top three or four make it to the weekly edition!

Since I've been in Arizona spending time with my father and learning about the family business, living on a mountain and dreaming of the ocean, the cultural void that is this state has really had me crying for the big apple. In the most literal sense. But, really, I don't know if it's New York that I miss. Maybe it's the East Coast. It's definitely my friends- though, I must say, when you live in NY, it's so easy to go a month without seeing someone who lives three blocks away.. it's sad. I definitely miss the fact that I can't go to see Bjork's Biophilia performance this month at the New York Hall of Science. (click on the pic for the link... I've seen Bjork perform and it's freaking RAD- don't miss it!)

But I definitely, 100%, do not miss the crazy neighbors, or living on the 5th floor walk up in NoLiTa (miss the 'hood, not the stairs). Or maybe those crazy neighbors are what MAKE New York? Can I imagine having my baby in New York City- dealing with the subway and the excess of people? Or is it better to raise a child out in the middle of nowhere, to escape the ugly realities of the city. AHHHH!!!!

While I peruse this argument in my head... while I am lost in Arizona... just take a peek at this little ditty and have a giggle about the insanity of living in a city. I'll just be over here working on my stockpile and practicing how to shoot zombies.

FROM THE NEW YORK TIMES

Social Q’s

Published: February 2, 2012

My apartment has thin walls. My neighbor sleeps with his TV on, and
the volume is loud enough to keep me awake. I asked him to lower it
several months ago, and he was happy to oblige. But it’s grown loud
again. Instead of knocking on his door, may I buy a device that allows
me to turn off his TV from my apartment? Lauren, New York

Why stop there? Just call the electric company and have his power
disconnected. That way, his pesky Waterpik won’t bother you, either.

You are entitled to a good night’s sleep, Lauren. But even if such
magical through-the-wall technology exists, you may not turn off your
neighbor’s television. Even though he is bothering you with it, it is
still his TV. And what if you ruined the climax of that 3 a.m. Bowflex
infomercial?

Knock on his door and let him know the volume trouble has returned. But
this time, suggest he buy a TV timer (or maybe you can split the cost).
He can set it to switch off the television after he’s drifted into
dreamland. He retains dominion over his appliances, and you get some
well-earned rest. If he resists, call your landlord.

We have been so happy in our small spaces, and, to be honest, the bigger the space, the more the headache. I mean, no wonder all of these Beverly Hills people have staff.. it's just too much drama to have a big house, when you don't really NEED that space.

What does one really need to be happy, anyway? Good friends, hopefully a loving family.. the comfort of enjoying solitude.

I have a dream that we will find a perfect piece of land and build a tiny house. And then we will build more tiny houses, so you can come and visit.

Check out this amazing website that I found via www.tinyhouseblog.com..

Below is the story of Jay Schafer, who downsized to an 87 square foot house. He did, however, upgrade to 500 sq feet when he expanded his family!!

Once you're finished with the video, you can visit the website for Tumbleweed Tiny House Company... enjoy!
So I was just perusing my latest Town & Country Magazine (which, incidentally, put a little hop in my step when it landed in my mailbox). I decided to subscribe because a) I want to minimize my computer time and b) there's just something so decadent about Town & Country! It's like our little American version of Tatler... which, incidentally, is another one of my guilty pleasures...

But I digress.

So I was just peeking around and saw an advertisement for a GORGEOUS room with an amazing vignette and a gorgeous sectional sofa. And then, I saw the name.

RESTORATION HARDWARE.

Really? Like, the one at the mall, you say?
Yes, the very same.

I've always been a fan- it's a cute store, and they have nice furniture. But I think this advertisement really sets them apart from their usual design scheme. It's much more sophisticated and, dare I say a little bit of chic for the masses?

But now, what the hell? How are we going to have so many fun shows on HGTV when people can just go to the mall and find something so cute. I see makeover tv success waning.... NOT! 0

So WHAT are you talking about, Caroline?

Here's the image that I love. Can't you just imagine this in your NYC apt? Nice work, RH.
(Oh, and excuse me, but the furniture for the other rooms is pretty damn fierce too)..

Check out the full website at Restoration Hardware online!

Oh, and I was in Turkey. Which was amazing. And we missed the earthquake, though that was far away from where we were staying...

I came upon this commercial for Dermablend with "Zombie Boy" Rick Genest. It's cool. I dig it. I wish he would smile a little more, but hey- he's a zombie, right! They don't smile much.

Edited by Karla Martinez and Vanessa Lawrence

Tom Dunn clearly bursts the stereotype of the all black-clad fashion
toiler, with his penchant for tie dying his own t-shirts and his
admission to loving Birkenstocks. Chalk it up to his Berkeley,
California upbringing, though years of working in PR and merchandising
haven’t quashed his colorful choices.

This past spring Dunn (above), who continues to work as a
fashion consultant, decided to lend his eclectic eye to his charming new
interior design boutique Overbey & Dunn on Christopher Street. The
store acts as a revolving vignette of meticulously curated furniture and
home accessories, centered around a chosen motif, with all items for
sale before the shop is changed up every eight weeks or so. Its newest
theme is “Gentleman/Boudoir” by Russell Piccione.

Here, Dunn professes his love of caftans, horseback-riding and his eight year-old goddaughter’s inimitable style.

Define your style in three words: Immediate, refined bohemian, sentimental.

Daily uniform: Slim pants with a t-shirt or button
down. From DIY tie-dye shirts (I tie dye vintage or used pieces and have
stacks of white clothes waiting to be done) with Simon Spurr trousers
to a linen madras button down with Gucci patterned pants.

Dunn in one of his tie-dye creations.

Well it's been an interesting week. I was flying back from work last Wednesday, happy that I was able to switch my flight to a non-stop that would get me home a little earlier.. well, to the airport, anyway. We were dog sitting so we had a full house up in Northern AZ- three dogs and two cats! Since one of the dogs is a 7 month old with a LOT of energy, it's been a handful. sooo.. work work work, don't get upgraded (bummer) but I get the exit row (awesome) and no one in the middle. Yay!

SO then, tick tock, I was just chilling, finished watching Blue Valentine on my computer (devastating, but two of my favorite actors) and I got up to go to the bathroom... when I returned, my seatmate was mopping off my computer.
Yes, the unthinkable happened, he had spilled water on it!

So, the beginning of this post will be "ODE TO MY MACBOOK.. you have traveled the world with me, and now I must lay you down to rest.."

After several emails back and forth, which included me having to contact the person sitting next to me so he could verify the story, the SPILLER gave me a little money, obviously not enough to cover the cost of a new Mac, but hey- I'm lucky I got anything, right? So now, I'm just about to order a new laptop and have it shipped here pronto!

And now... I'm on a freaking desktop, for god's sake!! But I can still play online!!

So let's get back to business.... the business of being GORGEOUS.

Everyone knows that water makes me happy (except when it's spilled on my computer, of course...) so I was over the moon when I found this AMAZING vintage swimsuit on Etsy. Are you kidding me??!!! This is sooooo perfect for poolside cabana, rose drinking days... and, of course, it's in France.

80s La Perla One piece Suimsuit Maillot

If you don't order it... I will.

See you poolside!

Well, here I am, at home relaxing with my Tito's vodka martini, House Hunters International on the giant TV, thanking my lucky stars that I don't work in residential real estate anymore.
YUCK! I know that most people think it's totally easy peasy to take on residential real estate, but trust me when I tell you it is a damn nightmare. Do you have any idea how picky people are? The time spent on dealing with people's whims? Watching someone actually make a decision on a $500,000 house based on an appliance that they love, or deciding against an apartment because they don't like the bathroom fixtures? It's really overwhelming how little people actually know about construction and the ease of customization (hello, a coat of paint goes far!). But, no matter what, I still love real estate. it's definitely one of my passions- I love cruising real estate websites, I always pick up the local real estate paper, and I've been to a few open houses and time share pitches... just because I'm nosy. Now, you don't have to be as crazy as I am- just watch this show- House Hunters is the perfect show for me- I can be a voyeur without all of the effort... but the international one is SO.much.MORE.Fun!!!!

(click below for HGTV's HOUSE HUNTERS INTERNATIONAL!!)

So it was about 10 million degrees today in Arizona. I only have today to run around and do errands, etc, since I'm off for a job tomorrow, and, thanks to the time difference and my stupid loyalty to United (well, it's not stupid, since I AM upgraded for my flight tomorrow!) I have to be off at 10AM so today was a bit hectic! But.. the jumper. So I put on one of my favorite go-to ensembles lately, a jumper. I have a variety of jumpers. Denim, linen, color block silk, leopard poly- when I find something I like, I stick with it! So today I was rocking the Gap denim jumper and it was awesome. comfy. Heat resistant. And, apparently, makes me very accessible, because everyone and their mother was talking to me today! I'm not saying that I'm not a friendly face, because I know I am, but I really, truly think it's because a jumper is a weird thing to see a grown woman wearing! It's like an adult in a child's outfit... but not creepy. Cute.

So I've been cruising around all day, smiling at everyone, enjoying the perks of wearing a toddler's outfit.
Starbucks:
"Oh, it's 2:15 and we can't give you a treat receipt after 2? That's okay! Here's your stamp!"
Home Depot:
"Hi! Hi! HI! What are you looking for? Can I get that for you?"
Delivery man:
Just did not get smile off his face! Delivered coin-op washing machine in a tie because his delivery team was busy. Then again, he could have just been Mormon... they're really nice.
Police at our property filing a report that someone from the MaidPro's ex husband violated parole by appearing on our property
"Oh, there's nothing to worry about! Is that a toilet snake in your hand? Here, let me help you unclog that toilet!"

okay I made the last one up. Well, they really WERE at the property, but I unclogged the toilet myself. REALLY!

So, after this crazy day of WORK and HEAT, I headed to my new favorite nail place for a much deserved mani-pedi. And they totally rocked it.

Until my nail guy (who had just totally given me the best foot rub in a public place EVER) was finishing my manicure.. and I'm feeling so happy that everyone has been living for me all day even though I"m clearly not a teenager and there is a distinct possibility that I should retire my jumpsuit (as IF!) and my nails are just about perfect.. when suddenly..
"Why you file your nails round?"
"um.. how else should I file them?"
"Square! Round is for old lady."

Well... maybe I'm an old lady. But somehow, I don't think that a square tip french manicure is EVER going to work with my ensembles. But it definitely gave me a giggle!

And, anyhow.. I can still rock a jumpsuit!

So today we'll look at beautiful photos of one-piece outfits. Groovy....

The perfect romper that you don't have to be 3 months old to wear, at Saks Fifth Avenue....

The jumpsuit that you want to wear out when you just want to be AMAZING..but be careful that you don't let the sleeves drag when you cram into the bar bathroom in this gorgeousness!

Stella McCartney at Neiman Marcus

Red Lace and Rhodesian Ridgebacks... two of my favorite things.

So I've picked up a new client this month and I can now say that this is a good week! At least I can work on my Premier Exec status with United- sooooo key if you have to fly once a week. Seriously, it's not a luxury, it is a NECESSITY.

This started out horribly- I'm trying to manage this beauty salon suite that exists in one of my father's buildings and it's pretty much a total fucking nightmare. Do you have any idea what it's like to have a 300 lb woman with a calf tattoo bigger than your head try to imitate you and make fun of you? Or have her 5 foot tall boss text message you repeatedly that you have "no idea what it means to know what a stylish salon" is? Yes, I am an equal opportunity person- big, tall, mean, stupid- please, go ahead and suck up some of my time. Because, like, I have no freaking idea what it means to be stylish, or to be in a hair salon. Oh, Tabatha, where ARE YOU? I need a salon takeover!

But hey- that's what makes the world go around, right? Pathetically enough, sometimes I want to SCREAM- do you have any idea the life I have lived???!!! Do you really think that your derogatory comments have merit???!!!!

Well, clearly they do, because here I am, writing about life in the trenches of REALITY. I've clearly spent way too much time with artists and musicians, surfers and stylists, friends and family.

I live a sheltered life. On purpose. I LIKE to spend my time with people that are on my same wavelength.. like... nice?

Anyhow, enough of that.

One of my first modeling jobs was for ASDA, a store in the UK. I remember, because one of my English friends thought it was hilarious that I was working for basically the Wal-Mart of the UK. I thought it was hilarious that I found a job that would pay me $2500 for the day. So everyone went home happy!

Here's a little fashion payback from ASDA- I've been hunting a lovely red lace dress for ages and can't believe I found it at ASDA, via the DM!!

All sorts of lovely lace dresses here....

Check it out. Oh, and hey, ASDA? I'll totally rock it out again for you if I get to wear this dress!

Coral sleeveless dress, £20, asda.com,

I would totally rock this dress in NYC while walking our beautiful puppy, KIKI KOCA

Well, hey... she makes me happy. Therefore, she gets her own post.
How do you define it?
I
hate the term. I don’t consider myself “plus-size.” I don’t consider
any of the girls on my board plus-size whether they’re smaller or bigger
than me. But it’s true that there’s really no true definition. The
second I say to someone, “I’m a plus-size model,” they just look at you
like, OK, if you’re plus-size then I must be oversize. So I would love
to just do away with the term and say “curvy” instead.

Is the model culture different for “curvier” models?
Definitely.
Within our curvy universe, it’s a lot more close-knit and friendly.
There’s not nearly as much competition. I think with the skinnier girls,
there are so many more incredibly beautiful, stunning girls that have
very similar features and characteristics. Whereas the plus-size
industry is a lot smaller so I think we accept more than compete. We
know you don’t have to be catty to get ahead. It can be kind of
cutthroat in the skinnier model community.

There is sort of an ideal body type for the non-plus-size girls. Does the same go for your market?
Every
client is different. You get a wide range. Some people like you much
smaller, size 10, size 8. Some people would prefer a 14 or 16. So for
me, I’m right in the middle at a sort of small 14, high 12. So I pad
sometimes since I’ve got clients who would prefer a solid 14 or 16.

You pad? What does that mean?
Literally.
I don’t know if we should reveal this secret! They’re pieces of foam.
So I just lay them flat on each hip underneath [hosiery]. They’re like a
solid inch and a half thick.

Like football pads for your hips?
Yeah,
to make you seem all around wider. I mean, from the side you look kind
of weird — and it feels weird. Like every now and then my arm gets
caught on it and I’m like, wait, this isn’t me. But it’s better for me
because I can still be healthy and work out and have the body I want.
It’s a little bit of model magic.

This isn't the best weekend in the world's history. What the hell is going on? A right-wing extremist killed over 80 Norwegian youths today in the name of Christianity. Death and destruction in the name of ideology.

Then Amy Winehouse.
Obviously, a troubled soul, with an amazing, breathtaking talent. But how do you harness creativity? Is it any wonder that so many talented musicians die in their late 20s? I think that it's hard enough to exist on a daily matter if you are mildly creative.. if you have artistic tendencies and beliefs that break the norm.
Now, imagine that 100 fold! Having words and music and melodies in your head at all times... and then you're famous, and everyone wants a piece of you. I can imagine that sometimes, you just want silence, and peace. Sadly enough, it's too easy to make your life stop.

So I hope we all appreciate our loved ones, and life, every day. Not just today. I'm sorry I never got to see Amy Winehouse perform live! Just as I never saw Johnny Cash.
But hey- maybe one day, I will.

Check out Amy Winehouse live... raw, beautiful talent.
Holy CRAP Terry Richardson actually rocked it out with this shoot!

I have to tell you that sometimes I find Terry Richardson's work too sensationalist for its shock value... but, that said, don't you always find his work.. interesting? Pushing the envelope? INNOVATIVE??

Check out his new shoot "TONS OF FUN" for Vice Magazine this month. It's amazing. I LOVE IT.
And you know what's pathetic? The people who are saying that it's a bad portrayal of plus women, that it's racist, that it's not beautiful. I am so tired of the general public flippin' complaining all the time!

I've been a plus model for 10 years, I'm with Ford Models and other successful agencies and I work, and I've been working for the entirety of my career. So I speak from experience. And you know what? There's always a freaking critic out there. When people take to the comment pages, it's always "she's too thin, she's not plus, she's been photoshopped" blah BLAH BLAH! Well, as we all know- you can't keep everyone happy!

But let's look at these pics- the women look like they are feeling SEXY, and they are being shot by a world renowned photographer for an awesome magazine. Who are YOU- (Certain blogs and magazines that shall remain nameless)- to say that they don't look gorgeous? As someone who has lived through many a Memorial Day weekend in South Beach- trust me when I say these girls aren't leaving a lot to the imagination, but until you've seen a girl match her weave to her thong and heels walking down the middle of Washington Ave picking up boys- you haven't seen anything. It's a twist on the typical- embrace it! What some people see as skanky, others see as HOT!

Vice cast these girls from Full Figure Fashion Week- which is not an event where you're going to find many Ford or Wilhelmina girls- we are considered too small! You have to be a size 16 + to even walk on those runways, and most of the girls are represented by smaller agencies that specialize in ACTUAL plus girls.

Wake up, world- beauty comes in all sizes. And so does ART.
Are we supposed to say, okay, you can use plus girls, but ONLY if you make them look conventionally beautiful? Oh, here's a unique idea- why don't we have them pose naked, or dress them in clothes form the 50's because, you know, that's when everyone looked like the chicks from mad men.
YAWWWWWN.

Well I'll stop bitching and post my fave pics. And do yourself a favor and go buy VICE- if you haven't read it before, you are seriously missing out. And support these girls!

TONS OF FUN

Photography by Terry Richardson
Published July, 2011

Especially since my damn upgrade came through. But still, it's hard to leave home when home is so awesome... and the cats look sooooo comfy.

I'm not a weird cat lady, but I do have a rather serious relationship with these two creatures that have been a part of my life for over 14 years!! Yes, this is exactly the week, 14 years ago, when I first tried my "Escape from NY."

After finishing up NYU and having a rather insanely eventful post grad year, which involved moving three times, having 10 LES street rats break into my apartment, club promoting with my BFF, House of Style, my first modeling gigs and many a late night, I thought it was time to jump ship and head west... to LA.
Well, I didn't make it to LA. I ended up in Arizona with appendicitis, worked this bizarro job where I sold computer parts at 5AM to East Coast businesses, went crazy after about 8 months, sold my car and moved to Barcelona. But that's another story...

On that road trip, I found my cats. Living in a double wide, nestled in the mountains outside Steamboat Springs, Colorado. We stuck them in our van and set on our way. Since then, they've traveled the world with me and it's awesome.
It's just hard to wake up in the morning when you see these animals that are just SO dedicated to getting sleep. I mean, it's like a job for them. How many positions can I sleep in? Please turn out the lights, I'm sleeping. Purring, snoring, whatever... cats really have it down.

Days like today, when my phone starts ringing at 6:30AM, or tomorrow, when I hop on a flight... it means I have to pack, prepare outfits (and I don't do that, travel with one color, interchangeable things, I'm a libra for god's sake!), and generally disrupt the schedule. The guilt!!! This must be what it's like to have kids. Do kids stare at you like that when you want to do your own thing?

Am I amazingly naive to believe that I could actually deal with four kids (my current wishlist.. maybe I should start with one.). It's not like you can get a kid sitter as easily as a cat sitter.

Everyone knows my cats. If you've been in my life, you know these they rule. Hell, Leo gets his own seat on the plane! But I digress....

And... on that note.. I'm dealing. I'm off to pack. Say ciao to the cats. And HELLO NYC!!! ( you know I can't stay away long). First, a few phone calls and cuddles....

xx

Let me just say that I've decided to end the day with "Interview with a Vampire."

This should pretty much sum up my day!

Have you ever had one of those days where EVERYTHING goes wrong? How is that even possible? Mercury is so far in retrograde I'm going to find it next week. Seriously. Time change sucks.. especially when your better half is from Europe and you have to drop him off at the airport at 5:30 AM for a flight to Holland. Oh, and you live an hour away from the airport, and you wear glasses and it's hard to see so you practically kill a million little bunny rabbits hopping in the road when you drive because you live on a mountain. Yes this is true.

Then you try to take a nap but the person renting your apartment in Miami is blowing up your phone because the flippin' A/C is out and it's like 10 million degrees underwater in South Beach, and now you need to buy a totally new AC unit for an apartment that you don't even stay at anymore because the Soho Beach House is so damn fierce.

So you get your sleepy ass out of bed because you can't hang out with your cats all day reading book 2 of the Hunger Games trilogy and you find out that your family unit dating an undesirable has rekindled what we thought was a dead romance. Boohoo whatevs.

more importantly, the upgrade for the flight on Wednesday hasn't confirmed. soooooo not cute.

After happily signing a restaurant tenant into one of your commercial spaces a few months ago, said tenant decides to have a mental meltdown after his wife leaves him so he stops paying rent.
So you have to lock him out.

Which means driving south. And it's 115 degrees.

WHAT THE HELL???!!!!

Driving down, you manage to catch up on phone calls. Arrive at location, no locksmith. Go shopping. Can't fill the void of the very bad day.

Start thinking that you have to test soon because you need new pics because your agent just told you that you look too healthy and you need to either gain weight or totally change your book. Also a true story.

Switch back to business mode.

Meet locksmith, change locks, send email to tenant indicating that they have not communicated so they are exterminated.

Go to deposit checks at bank, ATM machine eats checks, have to file claim on the drive home.

Drive directly to Whole Foods and purchase the following:

lovely green pitted olives from the olive bar
raw blue cheese
raw chocolate tart
2 bottles of water

Go home.

Two cats have vomited on the freshly laundered sheets, housekeeper was here TWO days ago!!!!

Make a rather large and lovely martini. Have potato chips for dinner.
check on upgrade. still not there.

Realize that tenant you locked out sent you a text last Thursday but it's a new phone and you don't know how to use it so you just found the message.

Switch to wine.

Play on the Internet, find some fun new blogs.
Watch Interview with a Vampire and laugh at the absurdity of trying to capture the imagination of Anne Rice in a movie with Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. hahhahahahahaahahahaaaa!!!

I am so happy this day is over!!!!

It can only get better from here

That's why they made chocolate tarts and hot pink Marc Jacobs purses.

xo

So I've been working in Colorado this week with the fam- it's been amazing, totally beautiful, and the town we're in has only 5,000 people, so it's a lesson in small town living!
The funny part? Spending so much time with my dad. He is so funny- and so set in his ways... and he reminds me of my grandfather, too. Hot tempers but full of love. And don't try to change their mind about anything, by the way!
Anyhow I was reading the Daily Mail (my fave daily treat, it's so much better than junk food) and I came upon this fantastic article about Prince Philip, for his 90th birthday- and the crazy shizzle he spouts.

Enjoy!!

Here's a great pic of the young couple (do you think it bothers him that at 90, he's still the Prince and she's the Queen?)

My favorite quote:

‘If you travel as much as we do, you

comfort, provided you don’t travel in something called economy class,

Yes, life has been insane. I've been debating on whether what direction I want to take this blog- first, I love posting little tidbits about style, travel, bicycles (www.nobikesallowed.com) but then I think- holy crap, my life is so flippin' bizarro, I need to share this with the cyberworld because frankly- I don't know any of you!
So you won't give me that weird knowing look when someone I write about is in our presence. Where do I start?
Well.. all roads lead back to DOlly, in my opinion. I am SO happy that we bought our pre-sale (for Dollyites only!) tickets to her upcoming summer tour!!
Yipee!!!!

If you haven't seen Dolly live- well, do it. Her voice is spectacular and she is truly one in a million. Plus, I met my man after I went to a Dolly concert in the Netherlands years ago. So, THANKS DOLLY!

Here are a few old school pics of her from her website.. and a little clip from the 70's singing Jolene! (This one goes out to a certain friend now living in Paris.. was this song written for you?)
Okay I did it.

I had to see what all the fuss was about!
I'm sure you've heard of Tracy Anderson- fitness guru to the stars, the one who creates beautiful bodies (though, she has had some VERY nice canvases to start with!!). Other than the obvs, Madonna, Gwyneth- Tracy Anderson also works with Maggie Gyllenhall and other non-celebs at her gyms in NY and LA.

ANYHOW.

She is a petite little dancer woman (hence- elf vs fairy?) with no body fat who has created an amazing workout!

I've just started with the MAT workout- and I swear, the ab section is actually... (gasp) fun! I mean, you're dancing! Truthfully I am feeling a bit UN coordinated as I've started but I'm looking forward to rocking it out over the next few months.

It was hard for me to move on from my beloved Cindy Crawford workouts- I love that she is a model, and tall, and super fit yet sexy. I can actually imagine my body looking like hers. But Tracy Anderson? Well, considering I'm about a foot taller than she is, and probably a foot WIDER that's a little more of a stretch- BUT I get her principles and I totally agree with them. Utilizing your own body weight to work out is SO much nicer than all of the fancy tools and gadgets. Most importantly- she emphasizes not to use weights greater than 3 lbs!

On her website, she has divided our bodies into four categories, and then you can order her "metamorphosis" DVD:

Um, huh? This gets a little confusing so I'm going to stick with the MAT for now. BUT- I will definitely be moving onto the metamorphosis once I've mastered the dance moves.

This is all about staying fit and healthy while LOVING your body!! (At least that's how I try to look at it, we can't just sit around hoping that the tummy is going to be tighter, or the arms leaner, can we?)

So- go for it- try out a little Tracy Anderson and enjoy!!

Here's a photo of the woman that will bring you so much pain but excellent results!!!!

Okay so I am loving my mountainous life. I go hiking every morning, I marvel at the beauty of the mountains, and I breathe the cleanest, most gorgeous air in America.

But I miss my messy Miami... probably why I still have a home there!
Fortunately, I am literally a hop-skip-and jump away from the Cali ocean... so when I need that saltwater fix- well- we hop in the car and we get it! Did I ever write about or cute little secret hotel there....??
But I digress.

This post isn't just about my incessant travel bug that lives inside of me! It's about how cute I'm going to look when I'm out in the sunshine!

And, per usual... Lanvin would do that just PERFECTLY.

(disclaimer: I have owned a strapless leopard print maillot for several years now, purchased at a sample sale at the Shore Club and designed by Melissa Odabash - it seved me well for a time!! Her designs are beautiful!)

This swimsuit is so perfect for a few reasons.

First, the cut in the bust. As a DD, trust me- I know what looks good, on all sizes. This cut will enhance cleavage in a good way- whether you're A or D.
The belt. Hellllooo curves!

I think I even detect some slight ruching at the legs???? Perfecto!!!

From one of my fave sites, Brown's Fashion (click on the pic for more info)

Here it is on their mannequin model (warning: will not look like this at home! Embrace your body don't be a hater and don't expect to look like plastic!)
you can really see the old vintage style here with the high waist and the low leg... but LOSE the SHOES!
just learn how to walk on your tiptoes by the pool.. so much more chic than trashy stilettos. Trust me.

This swimsuit may look best whilst lounging on a fluffy chaise oceanside, preferably at the new Soho Beach House in MIami where they WASH OFF YOUR FEET when you lay down and bring you gorgeous nibbly things and cocktails with a wave of a flag.

ahhhhhhh....
Okay so I am definitely getting into this whole RAW lifestyle. First of all, it hasn't been a huge change for me as my diet is filled with lots of fruits and veggies, anyway. But now, I'm really starting to look at everything in the stores differently... I see the processed foods, and then I just go home and try to make something better that still tastes good!
Well, I am definitely still in the "buying everything interesting that I see" phase as I'm learning to play with my new kitchen tools!

Today I played with my spiraliizer (vegetable spiral cutter). It's freaking AWESOME!! I made zucchini pasta with an avocado basil pesto and then took the sushi-grade ahi tuna from our local New Frontiers and "Voila!" here's dinner.

The freaking COOLEST new toy!!!! (Though part of the whole "raw" thing is to go back to nature, and I don't think nature knew that we would make spiral zucchetti!!)

So I've always been curious about the raw food diet. One of my BFFs was raw for a while- she even worked at a great little cafe in South Beach called "Food without Fire" and really rocked it. I never got totally into it, primarily because I've pretty much been a pescetarian (vegetarian who eats fish) since I was 14- so I'm kind to my body.
Until this week.
I read Carol Alt's raw food book and was SO inspired! I mean- look at her- she's gorgeous and healthy and her skin just shines! Also, I LOVE vegetables and fruits- so I truly thought this would be easy...

WRONG!!!

O.M.G. I stuck with salads and fruit because I wasn't sure where to start and I didn't really have the proper tools. And I ate a lot of NUTS and even germinated my own nuts AND made Almond Milk.
I felt so full it was almost uncomfortable. And I did NOT overeat. I think my body just freaked out over the excessive proteins from the nuts...
I gained FIVE pounds in 4 days!!! WTF? Carol Alt lost 8 lbs her first week!!
Just another example that ALL bodies are different and you need to do what is right for YOU!

So, what now? Well, I've ordered a dehydrator AND this awesome spiral slicer (you can make spaghetti from zucchini!!)... and another raw cookbook to add to my collection. Tonight? I had steamed broccoli with a teeny bit of cooked salmon (was a little worried about poor digestive system). Somehow, I think that dinner tonight was just fine..
Anyhow I haven't given up, but I definitely want to adjust... though I don't think I'm going anywhere near a NUT for a while!! I just really want to eliminate all processed foods and THAT is the basis of raw living.

Stay posted for more adventures in raw living!
(I'm going to have a piece of raw pumpkin pie for desert
Well, what has the world come to, SERIOUSLY?

Perhaps the people in Vegas have forgotten that Burlesque celebrates the woman's body? Burlesque embraces curves, and sexuality?
THIS is exactly what is wrong with our society! This woman has already had plastic surgery to create an image that she sees as perfect.. and she clearly stays healthy and looks amazing (see pics below), yet still is told: NO. You are wrong. Your body is wrong.

This is why it's so important for EVERY SINGLE ONE of you to look in the mirror and be happy that you are alive, breathing the air, feeling the sunshine- and that you are beautiful- however you are.

(you could also say a little prayer of thanks that you don't have to deal with this shizzle on a daily basis if you're not in the biz!)

Enough with my preaching, let's check out this little fatty and see what caused the producers to tell her to go live on lemons and cayenne.

well, OINK, OINK!

She looks beautiful! Hell- she survived the Playboy Mansion and the role of Hef's #1.. so you have to give the woman some props.

Let's admire some other burlesque images.. and what do you think? Should they ALL be told to diet? No hipbones in sight! No backbones to be found!

New Orleans Burlesque

The lovely Dita von Teese

Why can't we all just be beautiful to ourselves.. and not be subjected to the opinions of others???

Well, I just have to say- Holly, you look great. If you feel good enough about yourself to strip in front of hundreds of strangers, then props to you! Tell the producer to stuff it.

And be beautiful!

First of all, let me say that I am a HUGE fan of Danny Boyle. I am a firm believer that music truly sets the mood- and he has the most amazing ability to choose the perfect song for every moment. From Trainspotting to 28 Days Later, I can tell you in one second the exact part of a Danny Boyle film for a certain song.

127 Hours is no different- but it's even better, because you have James Franco! Our modern renaissance man!

Seriously, you know what the movie is about, right? Aron Ralston's truly insane story of being lost in Utah while canyoneering? You almost don't want to watch it because it's so graphic? (TRUE!). But- you need to go and see this film. It's painful, it's beautiful- you go a little crazy with him as he begins to despair. But it's really just a great story about the absolute will to live... no matter how you have to survive.

There's my two cents... click HERE for the official website, and check out the trailer below!
Happy New Year!

It's been a while, but hey- it's the holidays. Plus sometimes there's nothing too much to write about..

But I had to write when I saw the new pics of Crystal Renn for the Jimmy Choo campaign.

WOW! Gorgeous!

Crystal Renn has single-handedly turned the fashion industry around and has them eating out of the palm of her hand, literally. She is striking- her features are gorgeous and unique, and she can move!

I just hope that all of the other plus models out there aren't expecting the same...

This is such an interesting story of excellent publicity and a hard core, serious agent who knows how to market his client. Crystal started out super skinny, then turned plus after gaining a bunch of weight- and then, as soon as she started to get recognized by the big designers, lost the weight again... so what does type of message does that send, really?

And she did it with such a hoopla!

Here she is on the Today Show, just HORRIFIED that this poor photographer would DARE to airbrush her to look thinner (also taking all of the good away from the campaign, which was actually supposed to benefit others) (full article here ):

So, umm.... doesn't she look the same size in the photos below? Do you think she's complaining now?

Somehow, I don't think that we're going to see interviews with Crystal this time around... complaining about the airbrushing.
By the way, what is so WRONG about airbrushing??? Jeez- it's fashion, people- it's not real life. Politicians sugar-coat the truth. I've been airbrushed to look BIGGER- and I've been airbrushed to have no freckles. I've been airbrushed to look thinner and I've been positioned at a shoot to look taller. Who cares??

Anyhow I suppose the main point I have to make here is that this is one very intelligent woman with a great team behind her- and we can love her as a model, but let's not give so much attention to the airbrushing, or the weight, or the term "plus size." And let's not crucify her when the rest of her campaigns come out and she's actually a size 6- because it's FASHION..it's THEATER!! Enjoy it...

Anyone who knows me can appreciate this post.. I totally heart kids clothing! I don't have children, but I do have a goddaughter, and I love kids- but, more relevantly, I just adore miniature clothes.
it's difficult to design for children- you want them to look cute, but they want to choose their own clothes, as well- plus, it needs to be comfortable, durable, and not too expensive as they're going to grow out of it right away!
I've always thought it would be great to open up a consignment shop for children- but then I realized, I would never share anything! I would just end up a hoarder. One of our family friends recently opened up a kid's resale clothing store.. so I'll just have to have her pick faves for me!

I adore Stella McCartney's designs- they are simple, yet adorable, and unique. Her collection for the Gap was out of control!
Check out her full, new children's collection now... I've also picked a couple of my favorite looks!
I haven't posted for a long time. This is probably just because I've been totally overwhelmed over the past few months with new responsibilities, enjoying life, and living and loving under the sun.

When I take people shopping around Miami to show off the little boutiques, the hidden gems, up and coming designers and fun places to wine and dine, I spend allll day with them- sometimes more! So you have a flash relationship (though some have blossomed into real life friendships!!) and then just catch up when they return each year.

I worked with Sylvie Cachay over eight years ago in Miami- and I thought she was, quite simply, quite fab. She was a swimwear designer at Victoria's Secret, she had been poached from Marc Jacobs to work there- and, within a short span of time at VS, she went on to start her own label, SYLA.
When she came to the Miami Swim Show, I went to her booth and would catch up and look at her amazing products, her creative vision- she was a painter and mixed colors and patterns in unusual ways.
I was proud to know her and watch her success, and wear her swimwear! She had a radiant personality and always had a big smile on her face.

Sylvie was found at the Soho House in New York City in a bathtub yesterday, and her boyfriend is in custody for her possible murder. No one deserves to die like this, and I can only hope that her family gains some peace during this time.

Today is a day that I will especially savor life- walking, talking, sharing times with friends and loved ones, green grass, big trees, and the ocean, having been blessed with meeting so many creative and amazing people in my life.

wow, the final Kate Moss Topshop collection is out! I don't usually buy many pieces unless I totally, completely HEART it... but this year, with a nice, solid 70's influence- well, it's going to give me some great inspiration, for sure!

I had a VERY difficult time choosing my faves... I limited myself to THREE- but trust me, there were more. There was the scalloped leather jacket... or the full sequined dress... or the feathered cape.. It's just too much gorgeousness for words!
Is it weird that I actually am loving this shrug?
Perhaps it's the feathers.. there's just something a little glam about a feather shrug. Which would probably be why I keep going back to try on this awesome blush pink shrug at the local antique store.. but I just haven't actually decided to BUY it yet.
Anyway, I was cruising around online when I found THIS wonder....
I would rock this with jeans and stilettos. TOTALLY.
I've already written about my secret crush on high waisted jeans. I have to tell you- I rocked them last week! Vintage lee, pleats and all, rolled up with flip flops, and a mini-floral print sheer button down slightly tucked in.
People did not know what to do! Granted, I spent most of my day at Lumber Liquidators, Lowe's, and Home Depot, so I was surrounded by men all day who are more interested in concrete and dry wall than fashion- but I could tell they were a little confused!! You could practically see it.."hmm, maybe my wife is more stylish than I thought!"
hee hee.

Anyhow it's warm here on the west coast so I'm checking out some spring 2011 fashion. I am a BIG fan of Lover the Label- based in Australia, I wrote about them last summer. And looky look what they have! High waisted curduroy shorts! Genius... I do love!! And don't think that you have to be a size 25 to rock these- go AGAINST that line of thinking... this accentuates your waist AND you look fashion forward!
Unfortunately, they only ship within Australia (I shed a small tear here) BUT since I'm planning a trip there soon I may get to try them on in person!! yipee!!

So here's what all the fuss is about... Check out the full collection on line here:
