His state facing a massive budget crisis, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is not only abandoning his longtime stance against offshore oil drilling, he is working to skirt the law to make it happen. Schwarzenegger is championing a plan that would allow Texas-based Plains Exploration & Production Co. to bore as many as 30 wells from existing oil platforms along Santa Barbara's Tranquillon Ridge. After the plan failed to gain approval from the State Lands Commission, the Governor is now seeking to bypass the agency altogether and take the matter directly to the state legislature. The Surfrider Foundation and other non-profit organizations are calling upon state officials to prevent the state's legal decision making process from being circumvented.
