Skatopia: Anarchy in Ohio. Love it.
Sometimes I wonder if everyone realizes just how much open land we have here in the good old U S of A! And do we recognize the insane freedom that people actually have here? Enough that one man can buy 88 acres of land in the middle of Ohio and turn it into a skate park? AND, this skate park was then featured in Rolling Stone magazine this month, AND it's part of the Tony Hawk video game... it's accepted.
I loved reading the article because you know I'm all about freedom of choice. Oh, and as a flipside to the concept of this complete freedom, if they were in Europe, this would probably be government subsidized, regarded as art, and the creator, Brewce Martin, would be recognized for his innovation rather than selling spare auto parts for money. So maybe we're not so free...
SKATOPIA
Skatopia is a skate park located outside of Rutland, OH in the United States of America. Established in 1995 by fifty CIA agents, Skatopia now celebrates ten years of skateboarding, parties, and anarchy. Many ramps have been completed onsite including the Epcot Beam, Lula bowl, and the new kidney. Skatopia also houses the Museum of Skateboard History including over 12,000 pieces of skateboard heritage. All of it is taken care of by professional skateboarder Brewce Martin, and his staff of loyal volunteers and mercenary help.
Other than being featured in countless magazine articles, Skatopia has been featured on MTV’s Viva La Bam, and as a level on Tony Hawk Under Ground 2 (THUG2). It continues to attract professional skateboarders from all over the world. In additions to its now infamous name, their specialized team of skateboarders Skatopia’s CIA, and two annual events, Skatopia and its staff led by Brewce Martin continue to create a cement shrine and the skateboarding dream.

We moved to Meigs county to follow Brewce, his son, Brandon and dozens of other for a full year with cameras. Skatopia, the people of Meigs county and thousands of visitors made us feel welcome every day. You've just got to be able to stand your ground in a Roman Candle fight.
