The PROCONVE Porsche.. it works with Environmental Standards?!?!?! Go Brazil....
Well I've been talking over the past year with a lot of people about the emission standards that they have in Brazil, which, by the way, totally leave the United States in the dust. (No big surprise there!!) This is just another reason that people are continuing to invest in Brazil, and why we need to stop for a minute and LOOK at what we, as Americans, are investing our money into.
I mean, for goodness sake- if they can have an eco-friendly PORSCHE in Brazil, why do we get stuck with a flippin' Prius????
So here you go... a little information about PROCONVE, the Emission standard initiative, by which all new vehicle manufacturers must abide, from the World Business Council for Sustainable Development.
Clean Transportation Reduces Premature Deaths
IPS,
23 June 2005 - A sharp reduction in transportation-related pollution in Brazil's
large cities could save 50 billion dollars over the next 20 years by preventing
the premature deaths of 47,000 people and sparing hundreds of thousands more
from disease.
These calculations from the University of Sao Paulo Medical School are based
on the results of the first phase of the Motor Vehicle Air Pollution Control
Programme (PROCONVE), established by the National Environmental Council in 1986.
The programme has cut polluting emissions from new vehicles by between 80 and
90 percent, preventing 4,500 premature deaths between 1997 and 2000 and saving
between three and four billion dollars in health care costs, according to a
study prepared by the medical school.
CONPET is a Program developed by the Ministry of Mines and Energy,
coordinated by various Federal Government agencies and private
initiative representatives (CONPET’S Coordinating Group). Petrobras
is responsible for providing the technical, administrative and
financial resources for the Program. The Energy Conservation,
Renewable Energy and CONPET Management Department is the Company’s
body that acts as CONPET’S Executive Committee, being responsible
for creating projects, placing the strategies into operation,
promoting the institutional articulation and announcing the Program’s
actions. This Management Department is connected to the Gas and
Energy officer who, by a presidential decree, is CONPET’S Executive
Secretary.
Objective – Promote the Efficient Use of Energy
CONPET was established by a federal decree in 1991, as the National
Program for the Rational Use of Oil Derivatives. Its main objective is
to promote the efficient use of these sources of unrenewable energy in
transportation, in households, in commerce, in industry and in the
agricultural and livestock industries. For its deployment, it followed
the same guidelines as for PROCEL - the National Program for Power
Conservation and, likewise, it is conducted by the Ministry of Mines
and Energy.
Counting
on Petrobras’ support, the program establishes technical cooperation
associations and partnerships with governmental agencies, NGOs,
representatives of entities related to the subject and also organizes
and promotes projects. The actions of the program for the rational use
of oil and natural gas derivatives contribute to the articulation of
economic, environmental and institutional strategies.
Saves money, ensures your self-sufficiency and reduces the cost of products and services (Brazil’s Cost)
Preserves the environment by controlling the emission of gases responsible for local and global pollution
Increases productivity and competitiveness in various economic sectors
CONPET is a Program of the Ministry of Mines and Energy, coordinated by
representatives of the Federal Government, of the private initiative
and is managed with technical, administrative and financial resources
made available by Petrobras S.A.
