Red Light Fashion Amsterdam, and thoughts by me...
Wow!
So part of what we do when we are shopping is try to find new places of interest that are innovative, or unique, or that exemplify progression.
I don't think there's an area quite like the new shopping district forming in the Red Light District in Amsterdam. It's really, totally cool!
Basically, the city of Amsterdam is trying to "clean up" the Red Light District- over 200 of the prostitute windows have been closed, and they are no longer renewing licenses for windows. INSTEAD, they have given many of the spaces to up-and-coming Dutch designers! There is also a store which sells all of the products by the designers.
Although my trip to Europe was meant to be a journey to explore, and to clear my head- it has ended up being pretty damn crazy. That said, I am having the time of my life. I wouldn't change a thing, since I wouldn't be here now if anything was different. I'm a lucky girl, really!!!! And, most importantly, I am absorbing every single piece of culture that I can- I am happily overcome by the art, the design, the architecture, the new friends, by every single day when I walk down the street and I am inspired by something new or beautiful.
One thing that I am very much impressed with is the Dutch government's involvement with the arts. It's quite amazing that artists can gather as a collective work together- and actually accomplish as much as you can here in the Netherlands. Artists are given spaces- whether for working, or living, or as a place to display- and they are encouraged to submit proposals, and to beautify the spaces where they live!
